Project vision

Megged is a web app used by recreational soccer groups to track the results of their matches. I was approached to explore how to incorporate score and goal tracking, into the user flow.

Challenges

1.
Incorporate score and goal tracking into the current result tracking flow.
2.
Consider the impact of goal tracking on current and new leaderboards.
3.
Update relevant pages to include score and goal tracking.

User research

From feedback gathered by the Megged team, it was clear that users liked how easy it is to record results. However, score and goal tracking was repeatedly requested three reasons;
Users wanted more stats related to individual performance.
Users wanted a way to differentiate players with the same points total.
Most groups already track goals scored using a spreadsheet.

Design research

As soccer fans and players, Megged users are familiar with the league structure, scoreboards and goal reporting used by major sporting leagues. I researched these to find inspiration for how score and goal recording could be incorporated in Megged.

User journey

Megged has already established a journey for recording results that tested well with users. The challenge was adding goal tracking to the current journey without interrupting or complicating it.
I split the current Select winner step into two new steps; Add scoreline, and Add goal scorers. This was the intuitive place to add goal information and allowed us to capture two new stats with only one extra step.

Ideation

I created paper wireframes to explore ways to capture score lines and goal scorers in line with the familiar examples I had researched.
Then I explored the most promising ideas in a digital prototype.

Usability testing

I conducted a usability test with 3 Megged users. Each participant was given two teams of players, a score line, and the goal scorers, and asked to record a result. The main insights derived from the usability study were:
3/3 users found it easier to understand what each player had earned from a match when goals and points were grouped together.
The previous results page iteration, where goal scorers are presented separately to the points total for individuals. The updated results page with goals included next to points earned.
2/3 users found it difficult to add the score line as they had forgotten which team had which players, therefore we should add player information below each team.
Screen the prompts users to enter the scoreline.Add score page with player names added to help identify teams.
2/3 users expressed concern that they often remember the scoreline, but not all of the scorers, therefore we should a allow unassigned goals.
Previous scorers page which did not account for unassigned goals. The updated add scorers page, which alerts users to unassigned goals.

Addressing challenges

1. Incorporate score and goal tracking into the current result tracking flow.

By splitting the Select winner page into Add scoreline and Add goal scorers, we were able to intuitively incorporate goal and result tracking with one additional step.
The page for users to attribute goals to goal scorers before submitting a result.

2. Consider the impact of goal tracking on current and new leaderboards.

Goals scored has been included in the league table to differentiate between players on the same points total, and a GOALS table was added, sorted by highest average goals.

3. Update relevant pages to include score and goal tracking.

The scoreline has been added to the Season Results page to help users identify matches. The scoreline and scorers have been added to the match results page.

Impact

At time of writing, this feature is yet to be released. However, we will be tracking number of results added, goals leaderboard views, page views per user, and user feedback to monitor impact and inform future iterations.
"Working with Thomas is always a pleasure. He helped us expand our product thinking and designed one of our most requested features - not only perfectly aligned with our brand, but with real focus on improving our core metrics.
Thomas brings fresh ideas, creativity, and collaborative energy to every project. I'm excited to keep building on this work together in future releases."

Takeaways

This was very different project for me. It was my first time working on a product with a well-established style guide and design system.
It is also the first time I didn't have to perform outbound user research, as Megged has an active and passionate user base who proactively share their feedback and ideas.
This allowed me to hyper-focus on solving the user problem and how it fits into the larger Megged experience.
